Smart design to maximise space and budget for years to come

Smart design to maximise space and budget for years to come

Creating two distinct outdoor rooms to provide year-round interest that would be easy to maintain in years to come, was the priority for this client who lives in a bungalow with a small back garden.

The design is based around two contrasting spaces linked by slate-faced raised beds and seating  A formal, primarily hard-landscaped garden with a bold Corten steel letter-box water feature and Limestone paving cut through with curved brick lines maximise the space outside the living room by leading the eye to the corners of the garden.

The bedroom, meanwhile, looks out onto soft, curved lines, pebble-filled beds bordering a generous lawn and set-off with four large cylindrical Corten planters to display specimen shrubs chosen for their foliage, bark and interesting shapes.

A narrow colour scheme of blues, purples and whites planted in blocks creates year-round interest that’s simple and easy to look after.

Classic style for a Georgian walled garden

Classic style for a Georgian walled garden

Enjoying family life and entertaining with friends were high on the list of requirements for these clients, who also wanted to retain the style and elegance of their Georgian home situated in a quiet Oxfordshire village.

Privacy and simplicity of design were key elements to be combined around a swimming pool and spacious terrace of soft grey sandstone paving. White Hydrangeas and blue Campanula set the colour theme, punctuated by evergreen Buxus balls and a Euonymous hedge, while pleached Pear trees create extra height for shade and privacy.

A formal lawn edged with flowering Cherries and Whitebeams enhance the effect while allowing plenty of space for children to safely play.

An eight-speaker outdoor sound system, discretely set around the pool alongside carefully directed lighting from elegant copper fixtures bring the garden to life for parties as well as making the garden more accessible all year round.

A magical garden to share with a loyal friend

A magical garden to share with a loyal friend

With a busy lifestyle but keen interest in wildlife and gardening, this client wanted a garden to enjoy all year round. She also wanted to create a feeling of space and security that she could relax in with her loyal companion – her Labrador dog.

A small area of paving and a sloping lawn were replaced with a large curved slate patio across the full width of the house and a spacious upper terrace retained by a slate-faced, curved wall. The upper and lower areas are connected by wide steps that bridge a tranquil water feature flowing through the entire garden, ending in a gentle, pebbled beach area.

A high, curved slate wall incorporates a letter-box water fall to one side of the garden while an archway at the top of the steps leads through to a circular lawn surrounded by deep red and golden Acers, grasses and evergreen shrubs. Lighting throughout brings the garden to life when darkness falls.

A garden designed for the good life

A garden designed for the good life

With a passion for gardening and growing their own, these clients wanted space to relax in, safe and easy access to their garden through changing levels and easy-to-manage planting and veg beds that they could enjoy in their retirement.

Crumbling walls and a difficult grassy slope were replaced with a series of safe and accessible terraces linked by steps and enhanced with oak rose arches. A natural stone paved circular terrace, surrounded by planting sits midway to catch the afternoon sun with a waterfall tumbling down a York stone wall into a pond next to an extended patio at ground level.

Paving and compacted gravel surround the greenhouse and oak framed raised veg beds while deep borders full of perennials, shrubs and specimen trees curve around the lawn.

Creating a legacy in stone

Creating a legacy in stone

With their love of the environment in mind, these clients wanted to create a natural swimming pool and wildlife haven in the front garden of their energy-efficient superhome, located close to the town centre and on a busy main road.

Two monumental curved York stone-faced walls helped to dampen the noise of the road while providing privacy and security. A natural swimming pool was dug into the high bank feeding a waterfall into a lower wildlife pond filtered naturally by reeds and gravel.

Grassy banks planted with native species around the ponds slope down to a patio leading off the kitchen and a gravel driveway runs between the sweeping walls down to the road.

Creating instant impact with minimum effort

Creating instant impact with minimum effort

Like many people embarking on a new stage in their life, these clients had just moved into a new home in order to enjoy a hassle and maintenance-free retirement. Their new garden was a complete blank canvas without any individual character or interest.

Interlocking circles defined by rows of tumbled stone setts created distinct areas of lawn and a large Limestone terrace for entertaining. A bespoke stone bench with curved Cedar of Lebanon seats provides a special area for relaxation amidst fragrant planting.

A planting scheme of semi-mature trees, evergreen shrubs and brightly coloured flowering perennials provided the instant impact to transform this garden.

Sleek and contemporary design for outdoor living

Sleek and contemporary design for outdoor living

With an eye for design and a desire for a dramatic effect in their new garden, these clients wanted to retain a feeling of space while focusing on a specific colour palette. With outdoor entertaining a priority the challenge was to combine hard and soft landscaping features within a clean and structured design.

A stainless steel water feature created the drama in the centre of a densely planted border of shrubs, perennials and grasses. Polished stainless steel planters repeat the design theme throughout the garden.

Smooth, cream sandstone provides a spacious terrace with plenty of room for entertaining, while an intimate corner was created behind a screen of Sambucus Black Lace. Horizontal Cedar screens give a contemporary feel to the boundaries while pleached Hornbeams provide additional privacy close to the house.

A garden flowing from The Downs

Once the family had grown up and moved away, these clients were keen to transform their awkward and overgrown garden into a tranquil haven where they could enjoy their retirement and love of gardening.

Using strong lines and bold design, we created a garden that provided easy and safe access with terracing, wide steps and plenty of seating alongside a formal pond fed by a tumbling, pebble-lined stream.

Traditional features on a grand scale

Traditional features on a grand scale

A passion for golf, a young family and a three acre garden inspired this client to challenge us to create a unique country garden on a grand scale.

We created a winding stream through majestic specimen trees and drifts of marginal perennials. A traditional pack-horse bridge connects large sweeping grassy banks to woodland beyond.

Dry stone effect Yorkstone retaining walls divided terraced lawns from large mixed borders of flowering shrubs and grasses for all year colour and interest.
